WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) was designed to make it easy to join devices to a wireless network: you press a button on the router, the router and the device exchange a short code, and the device joins the network. That convenience is also where the weakness lies. While the WPS PIN is enabled, an attacker nearby can brute-force the eight-digit code and take over your network access without ever knowing the Wi-Fi password.
The eight-digit code is derived from the router’s MAC address, which means it can be calculated offline instead of guessed. Knowing how that code is produced is the difference between a network that takes hours to break and one that falls in minutes.
